After European PlayStation 3 owners had a little period of exclusivity with this update, Sony have made the update global today with gamers all around the world being able to download it.

This fee update adds global leaderboards which show the top 10 worldwide rankings for each car and mode. In addition to this it also adds full force-feedback support for Logitech's Driving Force series of steering wheels.

Gran Turismo HD 2.0 - Force Feedback Added

Posted by ChrisJP on Saturday, 24th Mar, 2007 | 14:24 :: Comments: 5
UK gamers have been given a nice little treat after getting their hands on the PlayStation 3 console in the last 24 hours, that treat has been version 2.0 of the free Gran Turismo HD demo. While largely identical to versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the game, 2.0 adds a much needed feature, Force Feedback.

IGN have tested four different Logitech wheels with the new demo, and have given their views on each one. It's an interesting read for those of you who have actually got a wheel. Currently there does not seem to be any release date on this updated demo for US and Japanese owners, but we'll bring you more details on that if and when it comes around.

GTHD Confirmed for Euro PS3 Release

Posted by ChrisJP on Monday, 26th Feb, 2007 | 12:43 :: Comments: 0
Sony has announced that Gran Turismo HD Concept will be available to download from the PlayStation Store on 23rd March to coincide with the European launch of PlayStation 3. The demo which has been out since December for American and Japanese PS3 owners was doubted by some that it would not be available for European owners when the console launches. This news hopefully clears up any anxiousness from EU folks such as myself not being able to get our hands on the game.

The GTHD demo is of course free to download, and lets you take out a total of nine cars on the Eiger Nordwand track. Setting a fast time on the track will have you entered into the online leaderboard - so there is at least something worth competing for - that is if topping online leaderboards is your thing.

Remember that Sony recently scrapped plans to continue production of the full game, instead turning their sights to Gran Turismo 5, which should be the true sequel to GT4. This obviously has a long way to go until we're able to see anything of it though. Rest assured we'll have our GT5 site set up well in time for all the news, information and media we'll be receiving.

1UP In Depth Review

Posted by ChrisJP on Saturday, 30th Dec, 2006 | 13:26 :: Comments: 3
Gaming website 1UP.com have posted quite an in depth article on their take of Gran Turismo HD Concept. They really don't have anything negative to say about the game, it's all praise, which of course bodes well for Gran Turismo 5 too.

I suggest you head over to 1UP and read the article for yourself, it's very interesting and a good read, especially if you don't have the chance to download or even play the demo yourself yet.

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Dec. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today the December 24 North American release of Gran Turismo™ HD Concept, available for free download, exclusively on the PLAYSTATION®Store (PS Store) for the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Developed by Polyphony Digital Inc., this driving game features an all-new course for players to be the first to drive a Ferrari on a PS3, as well as have the option to select a car from nine other worldwide manufacturers that include Infiniti, Lotus, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Suzuki.

"With the power of the PS3 technology, the world of Gran Turismo is refined by its full HD visual presentation and unique interactive experience, resulting in an even more realistic and true driving simulator."
Upon downloading Gran Turismo HD Concept, PS3 users have access to the Eiger Nordwand course and can compete in Time Trial races to collect and unlock new cars. Upon unlocking the initial 10 cars, the player has access to 10 more "Tuned Cars," as well as access to a new driving mode called "Drift Trial."
In the "Drift Trial" mode, the player can master the art of drifting and achieve ultimate control of their car. Furthermore, when connected to the
PLAYSTATION®Network (PS Network), the player can upload their times and view the Top 10 rankings for each car and mode, as well as play and save replays
online.

In "Drift Trial" mode, the player's drifting technique is tested, rather than their lap time. The player earns drift points based on their drift angles, racing lines, and speeds within evaluation zones located at various turns on the course. For each evaluation zone, the results are based on the number of flags and a numerical figure. The point total from all zones determines the player's drift points for the lap and is counted toward the rankings.
The following settings are available during gameplay:
1) Transmission -- the player can select either Manual or Automatic.
2) Stability Management (SM) -- the player can turn this ON or OFF during gameplay. ASM is designed to prevent vehicle skidding by controlling each of the four wheel brakes independently.
3) Traction Control (TC) Level -- the player can set the TCS level, which senses drive-wheel slip and prevents wheel spin.
4) Tires -- the player can select front and rear tires from nine types of brands.

GTHD Demo Details

Posted by ChrisJP on Thursday, 21st Dec, 2006 | 14:42 :: Comments: 0
IGN were recently able to gather new details on the demo game Gran Turismo HD, or should I say, Gran Turismo HD Concept, a suffix which it seems to have received for no reason, from the latest issue of Famitsu.

Gran Turismo HD Concept, will ship with one course and ten cars. The course being Eiger Nordwand, and you'll be able to race it normal and reverse. A full list of vehicles is below:
  • Suzuki Cappuccino '95
  • Mazda Eunos Roadster '89
  • Honda Integra Type R'04
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR'96
  • Infinity G35 Coupe
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR'05
  • Lotus Elise 111R'04
  • Nissan Sky Liner GT-R V Spec II '94
  • Toyota Celica GT-FOUR Rally Car '95
  • Ferrari 599'06
You start the demo off exclusively with the Cappuccino, but by clearing the time attack mode in a pre-set time, you'll be able to unlock the next car. Eventually, you'll unlock a drift trial mode.

The magazine also contains an interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, in which the series producer talked about how the demo came about, and what we can expect from Polyphony Digital.

Yamauchi said that is was the huge number gamers expressing their desire for the full game that made them put out a demo, and concentrate on GT5. He specifically mentioned overseas gamers, meaning any non-Japanese communities, so we can assume this includes all the popular GT forums on the Internet.
Another comment made by Yamauchi explained that they haven't decided whether to keep the idea of downloadable content in GT5, of course we can expect content of some kind, but most of us aren't wanting to download all the cars and tracks.

Yamauchi revealed that the Christmas Eve download will include Polyphony's next generation driving simulation engine. The new engine is supposed to have fixed problems such as drift control and drift angle. As previously announced, the demo won't have online races, but it will offer network rankings separated according to the various cars. Replays from the top ranked players will be available for download, so you can see how the best of the best race. Yamauchi also promised a photo mode of some form to become available for download in the future.

GTHD Demoted To Demo - Sony Concentrate On GT5

Posted by ChrisJP on Saturday, 2nd Dec, 2006 | 13:03 :: Comments: 0
What may come as bad news to some, the vast majority of GT fans are thankful that Sony have finally decided to cancel the experimental microtransactional game that is Gran Turismo HD, in favour of keeping it as a demo for PlayStation 3 owners. Sony have made the decision to concentrate on developing the proper version of Gran Turismo 5.

The Japanese PlayStation Store will have the download available on the 24th December, and the game will not feature online racing, but Gran Turismo 5 will feature it.

You can read more about the cancellation on IGN, you can also discuss the games cancellation and how relieved, or disappointed you are about it on GTBoards.

As for the future of this website, I'm not really sure what to do with it, obviously if the game is just a demo it is a bit pointless having a site dedicated to it. That said, we do currently have the premium domain granturismo5.com, which I may base off of this site. I'll probably keep GranTurismo-HD.com updated for a while, and then start redirecting it to GranTurismo5.com when more information is available on that.

6 New Drivers Screenshots

Polyphony Digital have updated the Japanese site with more images today. There are six new ones, all showing a couple of drivers that we'll see sitting in our cars. It's unclear if this is just a demonstration or part of some cutscene, or whether when in our garage, we can physically walk around and get in the car of our choice - the latter possibly being a bit impractical if we had hundreds of cars, but it would certainly be a nice touch.

IPB ImagePolyphony Digital have revealed what the Japanese packshot of Gran Turismo HD will look like.

Click the thumbnail to the right to take a peek at what you'll probably be seeing in a store near you, albeit next year. Apparently the game is still set for its Japanese release next month, we'll bring you more news on whether or not this changes though, so stay tuned! There is still no word on the North American or European release unfortunately.

Also, if you prefer larger images, there's a full, high quality image measuring 1712 x 2000 pixels version of this packshot which you can see here.

20 More Screens and 2 New Videos

Posted by ChrisJP on Tuesday, 21st Nov, 2006 | 15:35 :: Comments: 0
Apologies for the lack of updates this month, I've been rather busy with other things. In the last few weeks the Japanese GT site has been updated with more screenshots and a couple of new videos. 15 of the screens show car models, 2 show drivers, 1 shows spectators, and the final 2 are additional Eiger screenshots.

The first of the two videos shows the car selection process, or some of it anyway, they select a few cars and the camera pans around them at some great angles. The second shows a replay at Eiger, you'll notice at the start of the replay the spectators are actually walking around - a small detail which I don't think has been pointed out before, not that it's anything major anyway.

Screenshots: Check our Gallery for the 20 new ones.

13 New Screenshots

The Japanese Gran Turismo website has been updated once again with 11 new high definition screenshots, there's also 2 additional screenshots in a page showing off the new Ford GT LM spec II Test Car. However, the page is of course written in Japanese which I can't read, and the screenshots are only small at 480x320. If you'd like to see them anyway then head over to the Ford GT LM article.
The 11 new screenshots, all of the Eiger track again, are below.

IGN GTHD Recap and 2 Lotus Videos

Posted by ChrisJP on Saturday, 21st Oct, 2006 | 11:30 :: Comments: 0
IGN have posted another preview of Gran Turismo HD. There's no new information given, it's basically more of a recap on what we already know.

One notable difference is that this time, IGN had to use the PlayStation 3's SIXAXIS controller due to the limited space, as opposed to the Logitech Driving Force Pro wheel which they had used at other presentations. IGN point out the drawbacks and improvements with this.

The biggest difference between the presentation today and what we've seen before is that due to space concerns, we used the SIXAXIS controller to play the game rather than Logitech's Driving Force Pro (which will in fact be supported in the final game). Obviously, using a hand-held controller doesn't provide quite the same level of precision or realism of a steering wheel, but as most folks will use the standard first-party controller to play the game, this gave us a good chance to see how well it'll work.

The main drawback of the SIXAXIS with regards to Gran Turismo is its lack of rumble functionality. Because you can't feel the feedback of the road beneath your tires or the rumbling of the engine, cars seems to be a little more flighty than before. As we've played the game numerous times with a wheel, we know that they feel just as good as they ever have, but without rumble it does take away from the experience a bit.

Having said that, the SIXAXIS' improvement of the Dual Shock 2 is its fully analog L2 and R2 buttons. While the game was still set up to use the right analog stick for gas and brakes, toying with these buttons let us realize that they will work much better than having to delicately manipulate the X button to keep from spinning out for those of you who don't like to use the right analog stick.

In addition to the article, IGN have uploaded 2 new videos of GTHD, both showing a Lotus, one where they're driving and one of a replay of it. Check them out at the links below.

It's actually quite a decent trailer, and I'd recommend you all watch it.

New GTHD Details - Damage, Online Play, AI, and more...

Posted by ChrisJP on Sunday, 24th Sep, 2006 | 13:38 :: Comments: 0
Series producer Kazunori Yamauchi has held a talk where he discussed in detail some of the features of Gran Turismo HD, in particular the online play, damage, and AI.

First of all was a recap on the Classic and Premium modes, which you can read about in our earlier news posts. Then a quick mention about Ferrari. Ferrari cars will not only appear in GT HD, but starting roughly 6 months from now and continuing for a period of a year, Polyphony Digital and Ferrari will engage in collaborative marketing efforts.

The focus then turned to the online aspects. Yamauchi started by saying "GT HD is an online game, and a large scale one at that." He even hinted at much more in depth plans - "We'd like to offer users the freedom that was only available to developers," without going into further details.

Updates issued by Polyphony seem like they will be made over the course of the next year, one of which should include car damage. At long last it will make it into the series, becoming available some time during 2007. Another update will apparently be for the AI, with updated routines also becoming available for download in 2007.

The reason why we are seeing GTHD, as opposed to GT5, is because of the incredible amount of time it takes to model the cars. Yamauchi said that it took around a month to make a car for GT4, now, it takes 6 times that for a car in GTHD Premium mode (and GT5 level). "The amount of data for each car is approximately 20 times that of GT4."

New Pricing Details

Posted by ChrisJP on Sunday, 24th Sep, 2006 | 13:24 :: Comments: 0
Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that Sony plans to make Gran Turismo HD available for just the cost of the game disk and manual. This suggests that the game will eventually retail for just a few dollars, softening the blow somewhat of having to purchase tracks and cars individually.

Development of GTHD is said to be at around 70% completion, and Sony hope to be able to make the Japanese release date of December. North American and European release dates are currently unknown.

58 New Screenshots

Posted by ChrisJP on Saturday, 23rd Sep, 2006 | 22:28 :: Comments: 0
After browsing the official Japanese Gran Turismo site I realised there was a whopping 58 high res screenshots that we hadn't posted here. 39 of them from Premium mode, the other 19 of Classic mode. Seems they aren't yet posted on any big gaming sites, nor are they on the European and American GT websites.

Obviously we can't really fit all 58 in this post, so head over to our screenshots gallery to see them all, some samples are below.

Official GTHD Trailer Released!

The official trailer for Gran Turismo HD is now on show. I just watched it and I have to say the cars exteriors and interiors that are shown in the video look gorgeous, and for the Ferrari lovers out there... yes you do get to see one. Gamespot also have a few gameplay videos for your viewing.

On a sidenote, Gamspot have uploaded an exclusive interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, basically explaining what GTHD is, along with some gameplay and trailer clips.

Info from GTHD Press Event

Posted by ChrisJP on Saturday, 23rd Sep, 2006 | 13:17 :: Comments: 0
Gaming blog Kotaku were able to get into a press room with 40 or so other press members, a room in which Kazunori Yamauchi was talking about GTHD. There's not a lot of new info, but a few specifics that we didn't know about before.
  • There will be regular system updates of new content, cars, tracks etc.
  • GT:HD Classic content will feature 770 cars, 51 tracks, 4500 items - all downloadable.
  • Car parts and other visual parts to customise your car are hoped to be added, for gamers to download.
  • Ferrari's will be in the game, but the Ferrari formula 1 car in particular won't be.
  • Damage modeling has been talked about for race cars, but definitely not for consumer cars
And an interesting quote from KY - "Gran Turismo HD is the bridge to GT5, there would be no GT5 without this game."
